I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer on September 10, 2018. Two days later, I had surgery to remove the tumor. That word “cancer” is the scariest word I’ve ever heard in my life. It hits you hard and you don’t know what to think. I considered getting a second opinion, but after meeting Dr. Niyati Bhagwati of Bronson Oncology and Hematology Specialists, I knew I was in good hands. She’s very caring and thorough, and I just love her dearly. I feel like we connected the first time we met and I felt like I could talk with her about anything. The nurses at the Battle Creek Cancer Care Center are fantastic. Taylor Herlein was one nurse that really stood out to me, but every single one is amazing. It is clear they love their jobs and they do it well. During my first few chemo treatments, the nurses did a great job keeping me calm through the anxiety and crying sessions. I’ve also been attending the free monthly support groups offered by the Cancer Care Center. After I sat in on the first support group, I realized it made me feel good to talk with people who really understood what I was going through. It was also nice to see some familiar faces when coming to the Cancer Care Center for treatment. Bri DeBoer, the support group organizer, is wonderful. She’s brought in several speakers and presenters, including a representative from the American Cancer Society and a yoga instructor. The people who work here are what makes Bronson so special.
