Bronson Offers Free Program on Advances in Prostate Cancer Screening
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month – a crucial time to learn about a type of cancer that will affect approximately 13 out of every 100 men in their lifetime. Prostate cancer develops in the male prostate - a small gland in men that sits below the bladder, just in front of the rectum. It is the second most common type of cancer for men (following skin cancer) and early detection is key to survival. A prostate exam by a primary care provider or urologist is recommended annually for men age 50+.
On Thursday, October 10, Bronson Healthcare invites community members and healthcare professionals to attend Advances in Prostate Cancer Screening: The Role of Biomarkers & MRI in Early Detection – a free presentation by urology expert, John Thomas Wei, MD.
Dr. Wei will discuss:
- Prostate cancer screening and the importance of early detection
- The latest biomarkers for prostate cancer
- The role primary care providers play in prostate cancer screening
This event is supported through generous donations to Bronson Health Foundation in memory of Jim Gunderson. Jim was an entrepreneur and business leader, who served on the Bronson Healthcare board of directors for 25 years, including 5 years as chairman. He lived with prostate cancer for nine years before his death in 2021. “The more Jim could help people the happier he was,” says his wife Sally Gunderson. “His biggest hope was to fund early detection of prostate cancer so more lives can be saved.”
Dr. Wei will speak at the Bronson Gilmore Center for Health Education located on the North Campus of Bronson Methodist Hospital (7 Healthcare Plaza, Kalamazoo, MI 49007). Free parking is available in the adjacent Jasper Street Ramp. Appetizers will be served from 5:30-6 p.m. with the presentation starting promptly at 6 p.m.
