Bronson Cancer Center Hosts Cancer Survivors’ Celebration

On Wednesday, September 27, the Bronson Cancer Center in Kalamazoo hosted an event for patients who are currently receiving cancer care, are in remission or are now cancer-free. Over 150 patients, families and community members gathered for this annual celebration.

“It is wonderful to have all of these people who are connected by cancer come together to celebrate survivorship and share their individual stories and experiences. We want our patients to know they have the support of the Bronson Cancer Care team, as well as the community and their family and friends,” said Director of Practice Operations Mark Montross.

Bronson nurse navigators, occupational therapists, surgery specialists, pediatric hematology and oncology providers, genetic counselors and program coordinators were there to answer questions and connect with patients and families. Attendees enjoyed a free meal and activities including chair massages, painting, raffles and games. Representatives from the American Cancer Society, the Blood Cancer Foundation of Michigan, the Calhoun County Cancer Control Coalition (5C) and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program (BC3NP) also took part in the celebration.

“Our Survivorship Program helps patients get the care they need post treatment and beyond. This event is part of the journey. Our patients need and welcome a celebration like this as they move into the next phase of life after having cancer,” said Practice Manager Doreen Scholly.

The Bronson Cancer Center opened its doors on the Bronson Methodist Hospital campus in downtown Kalamazoo in February 2021. The five-story, 85,000 sq. ft. facility houses offices and clinical areas for medical oncology, hematology and infusion services. Patients and families receive not only exceptional medical treatment, but a variety of support services such as survivorship, palliative care, nutrition counseling and healthy living activities.
