Four Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution

The New Year is a great time to set goals toward living a healthier life. Read about some steps you can take to help ensure you reach your goals!
If you’re like most people, you have likely set a New Year’s resolution…and also broken one. One of the most common New Year’s resolutions people set is to lose weight and get in better shape. However, US News and World Report has found that nearly 80 percent of people who make these New Year’s resolutions give up by the second week of February. Don’t be a statistic! To increase your odds of making your New Year’s resolution stick, check out some of these simple tips.

  1. Start small.
There is no shame in working your way up to your resolution. If you have found yourself going days or weeks without making it to the gym, don’t expect yourself to complete an hour-long workout seven days a week. Instead, make it a priority to get your heart pumping three days a week and work your way up from there.

  2. Make a plan.
Once you have set a resolution that is right for you, put together a plan. This can be a workout routine, a timeline to reach your goal or strategies to stay motivated. If you need some help creating a plan, set up a personal training evaluation with a certified personal trainer. They can help you create a realistic plan that will help you stay on track and work toward your goal!

  3. Find a support system.
You have your goal and your plan, what else could you need? Support! A support system will give you the encouragement and resources you need to keep your resolution and reach your goals. Find a workout buddy to keep you accountable or a weekly class to look forward to.

  4. Make it fun.
Making changes to become healthier can be a lot of work, but it can also be fun. Exercise doesn’t have to mean lifting weights or running on the treadmill. Sign up for a class, take some time to swim with the kids or shoot a few hoops on the basketball court. Anything that gets your heart pumping will keep you on the road to a healthier you!

A new year brings us all a new chance to become an even better version of ourselves. How are you going to make it your healthiest year yet?
