New Years Resolutions That Stick

By Simone Bruemmer, DO of Bronson Family Medicine – Helmer Rd.

If leading a healthier lifestyle is a New Year’s resolution of yours, now is a great time to start thinking about your 2020 goals. Some research suggests 85 percent of people who make resolutions set goals to lose weight, get fit, strengthen their overall health and improve themselves. While everyone starts with good intentions, a study by Statistic Brain shows 80 percent of people that set New Year’s resolutions break them.

Partnering with your primary care doctor is a good place to start when you want to improve your health. Whether you’re trying to lose weight or kick an unhealthy habit this year, we can help you get started and stay on track with your goals.

To increase your odds of making your New Year’s resolution stick, check out some of these simple tips.

  1. Start small.
There is no shame in working your way up to your resolution. If your resolution is to quit smoking, start gradually. Rather than quitting cold-turkey on January 1, cut back the amount you are smoking each week. This will help with feelings of being overwhelmed as you work to improve your health. Setting an unrealistic goal increases the chance of breaking your resolution, which can damage self-esteem.

  2. Make a plan.
Once you have selected a resolution right for you, set a plan. Whether it is a workout routine, a timeline to reach your goal or strategies to stay motivated, a plan will help you stay on track.

  3. Find a support system.
You have your goal and your plan, what else could you need? Support. A support system will give you the encouragement and resources you need to keep your resolution and reach your goals. Support comes in many forms, whether it is a workout buddy to keep you accountable or your doctor to help you plan and work your way to a healthier lifestyle.

  4. Make it fun.
Making changes to become healthier can be a lot of work, but it can also be fun. Try participating in a fun group exercise class, following new and creative recipes or setting positive rewards for yourself as you hit milestones in your goal. The journey to a healthier you should be a fun one!
