What is LSVT BIG & LOUD Therapy?

Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) is a treatment option for people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). It incorporates speech, occupational and physical therapy to improve daily living. It is common for people with PD to experience changes in their voice. These changes may include a softer or monotone voice, hoarseness, mumbled speech and lack of facial expressions. People may also experience a reduced range of motion and motor skills, such as small, shuffled steps or impaired balance and coordination.

Why choose LSVT if you have Parkinson’s disease?

Therapists from multiple disciplines including speech language pathologists, occupational therapists and physical therapists work together to form a care plan to improve skills used in daily life. People living with PD and receiving LSVT therapy often have improved facial expressions, speech, swallowing and motor skills. All therapy sessions are personalized based on each person’s interests, with the focus of improving daily living activities for home and work. The therapy exercises are designed to change brain function. LSVT is also covered by most insurance policies.

Frequency and Duration of LSVT BIG & LOUD Therapy

Based on research done over the last 30 years, the recommended number of treatment sessions is 16 individual, one hour sessions per discipline, delivered by LSVT BIG & LOUD certified clinicians. Treatment should occur four consecutive days a week for four weeks. People with PD should practice their therapy exercises twice daily on non-therapy days.

After completing the LSVT Big & Loud program, it is recommended to continue to practice exercises daily at home. You can work with your therapists to schedule tune-up sessions, as needed. You should also work with your primary care provider to develop a long-term plan of care.
