Pediatric Intensive Care
If your child is critically ill or injured, you can rely on our specially-trained doctors and nurses to provide the highest level of care. You’ll find comfort knowing the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Bronson Children’s Hospital is staffed all day, every day.
Our highly skilled team will work tirelessly to care for your critically ill child. Children and adolescents are admitted to the PICU for:
- Trauma
- Burns
- Neurological problems
- Respiratory illness
- Ingestion/overdose
- Surgical recovery
- Dependency on mechanical support
- Other medical or surgical needs
Patients are admitted to the PICU directly from the physician’s office, by referral from regional hospitals, by transfer from within the children’s hospital or from our Trauma & Emergency Department.
Care designed especially for your child
Children need treatment specific to children. At Bronson Children’s Hospital, we recognize your child isn’t just a small adult. In our eight-bed pediatric intensive care unit, your child will be monitored by a pediatric intensivist and a trained pediatric nurse during sedation procedures. Four transition beds are available for the care of critical patients or general pediatric patients as necessary.
If your child needs to be sedated before undergoing a procedure, Bronson Children’s Hospital offers two sedation suites. These suites are designed to help calm and distract your child by creating a soothing atmosphere. The rooms feature whimsical murals by local artist Susan Teague.
A team approach to healing your child
The team that will be taking care of your child in the PICU is made up of skilled professionals including trauma surgeons, pediatric surgeons, pediatric intensivists, pediatric hospitalists and pediatric specialists from more than 25 specialty areas including orthopedics, cardiology and radiology. Critical care for our pediatric patients is provided by Bronson Pediatric Referral Service.
