Knit Baby Cap

  • #4 Needles
  • Baby Weight Yarn
  1. Cast on 72 sts.
  2. K2, P2 for 3 inches.
  3. K 2 rows to make a ridge on right side.
  4. P 1 row
  5. Work in stockinette st for 14 rows.
  6. K 2 rows to make another ridge.
  7. P 1 row
  8. Next knit row; K 2 tog. across row.
  9. P 1 row.
  10. Repeat Dec. row until 9 sts remain.
  11. Leave a strand long enough to draw through these 9 sts and weave or sew up back seam.
  12. For safety reasons, please do not attach pom-poms, buttons, ribbons, etc.

Knit Baby Hat

  • Newborn: use 4-ply yarn, #5 and #8 double pointed needles
  • Preemie: use 3-ply yarn, #4 and #7 double pointed needles
  1. Cast on 16 stitches loosely on each of 3 needles of the smaller size
  2. Knit five rounds of K1, P1 ribbing
    (If desired, you may do 10 or 12 rounds for a turned back cuff)
  3. Change to larger needles
  4. Knit stockinette for 18 rounds
  5. Next round, K2, K2 to the end (eight stitches per needle)
  6. The next five rounds can be done in ribbing (K1, P1), seed stitch, or stockinette
  7. Last round K2, K2 to the end (four stitches per needle)
  8. Cut yarn leaving 18 inch length
  9. Thread on yarn needle and pull through remaining stitches (do this twice--first on the needles and then as you remove the stitches from the needles)
  10. Weave in the yarn ends
  11. For safety reasons, please do not attach pom-poms, buttons, ribbons, etc. 

Knit and Crochet Newborn Hats

Hat Dimensions

  • Length equals 5 1/2 to 6 inches
  • Circumference stretches to 13 1/2 to 14 1/2 inches

Knitted Pattern

  • Make with 4-ply yarn for newborns
  • Use lighter weight for preemies
  1. Cast on 48 stitches loosely using number 4 needles
  2. Knit 5 rows of K1, P1 ribbing
  3. Change to number 8 needles
  4. Knit 18 rows in stockinette stitch (K1 row, P1 row)
  5. K2, K2 together across one row
  6. Knit 5 rows of K1, P1 ribbing
  7. K2 together across row
  8. Cut yarn to 18 inch length. Thread on yarn needle and put through remaining stitches. Pull up and sew together and down the side.
  9. For safety reasons, please do not attach pom-poms, buttons, ribbons, etc.

Crocheted Directions

Materials needed:

  • Size 5 (F) crochet hook
  • 4 ply or sport weight yarn
  • Tapestry needle
  1. Chain 30 stitches
  2. Turn and double crochet into second stitch from end
  3. Continue to double crochet in each stitch across
  4. * Chain 2 and turn
  5. Double crochet in each double crochet across
  6. Repeat from * 22 times or until circumference stretches to 13 1/2 to 14 1/2 inches
  7. Fold piece in half and slip stitch hat together
  8. Cut yarn, leaving 18 inches of yarn to finish
  9. With tapestry needle, gather one end of hat until end is closed off

Knit Stretchy Newborn Hat

  • Newborn: use 4 ply yarn
  • Preemie: use 3 ply yarn
  1. Cast on 48 stiches loosely using number 5 needles
  2. Knit 5 rows of K1, P1 ribbing
  3. Change to number 8 needles
  4. Row 1 & 2: K2, P2
  5. Row 3: Knit
  6. Row 4: Purl
  7. Row 5 & 6: P2, K2
  8. Row 7: Knit
  9. Row 8: Purl
  10. Row 9 & 10: K2, P2
  11. Row 11: Knit
  12. Row 12: Purl
  13. Row 13 & 14: P2, K2
  14. Row 15: Knit
  15. Row 16: Purl
  16. Row 17 & 18: K2, P2
  17. Row 19: Knit
  18. Row 20: Purl
  19. Next row: K2, K2 together across one row (36 stitches)
  20. Knit 5 rows of K1, P1 ribbing
  21. Next row: knit 2 together across (18 stitches)
  22. Cut yarn to 18 inches. Thread on yarn needle and put through remaining stitches. Pull up and sew together and down the side.
  23. For safety reasons, please do not attach pom-poms, buttons, ribbons, etc.
